COSHH Software UK: Buyer’s Guide 2026

Updated: Aug 31
COSHH software does not make a hazardous substance less hazardous. What it can do is stop the important information living in three folders, two spreadsheets and somebody’s memory.
Start with what COSHH actually requires
HSE explains that COSHH is about adequately controlling exposure to substances that can harm health. That includes identifying substances, assessing risk, deciding controls and making sure people understand how to work safely. Software should support that process, not replace judgement.
Useful software features
A current substance register
Safety data sheet storage and easy retrieval
Task-specific COSHH assessments
Control measures and review dates
Links between substances, locations and activities
Worker access on site
Version history and audit evidence
The SDS trap
Having an SDS in the system is useful. Treating the SDS as the COSHH assessment is not the same thing. Your assessment needs to consider the way the substance is actually used, who is exposed and what controls are needed.
Test it from the worker’s phone
Pick one substance and one real task. See how quickly a worker can find the current assessment and controls without knowing your filing logic. If the answer is “ask Dave where it is”, the software has not solved the problem.
Bottom line
The best COSHH system keeps the live record understandable, current and accessible. If it only makes the office filing cabinet digital, aim higher.
